At about midnight last night (a little past), Comcast went down again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I successfully switched to my mobile hotspot via ddwrt router and was able to get some internet functionality back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By coincidence this device came in today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSM USB Modem<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It goes under the name KuWFi 4G LTE USB WiFi Modem Mobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you plug it in, it gives you an RFC 1918 IP address (you can configure this)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there you can connect to the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does appear as an ethernet device in Windows. I am going to try this with Linux, but online reviews said after a while it reverts to a “modeswitch to a GSM modem”. I vaguely recall what that is, but I am going to do more research on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those researching, I basically got a t-mobile SIM, activated it using a normal smart phone (in my case a Pixel Pro 7) then moved the SIM into the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SIM actually goes into the USB portion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when you get it plugged in like I said you get an IP address via DHCP, the default gateway is the device and you can connect to it with a browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the browser you can send and receive SMS messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will see though, I am going to connect my Linux box to it and see how it behaves for a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
