Brix Small Computer

Found this deal on Frys weekly ad (in hindsight it was a meh deal)

It is a Gigabyte Brix Celeron 4105 barebone PC.

The computer and the SSD was a good deal at $125.oo but you have to add RAM and I maxed out the 8GB (small for nowadays) and it cost me about $200 with tax. Still not bad but read on

The unit is simple, with 3.5mm Audio in the front and USB-C and USB3 on the front with the sides vented for airflow.

The back has two more USB3 ports, a realtek GB ethernet port, mini displayport, HDMI and DC power.

The 2.5″ SSD attaches to the cover (which is the bottom of the device. Four screws attaches it to a mounting bracket, that bracket is also attached to the bottom case with 4 identical screws. Four long screws attaches it to the main box.

Internally, you can also add a M.2 Sata, and this is where it gets pricey…

The original use was the have a portable computer running vmware player that I can take around with me. Unfortunately, I got greedy, 120GB probably would have been fine, but I wanted to keep ISOs and a larger VM, I could have gotten away with a simple 1TB Sata, but I got even more greedy and got an NVME and a 250GB SSD

So the reasons it was expensive wasn’t technical… it was greed.

At least the power supply is an easy to find 19V with a standard DC barrel connector.

For its intended use, this should work nicely. I would like to note I could not get CentOS 7 to install on this box, doesn’t mean it would not run, just that the installer did not seem to like the USB 3 ports.

More research will be done.. will keep you posted.
