Asus Chromebit Review

Finally got a chance to unbox my Chromebit CS10

Not much to the box

Here are the contents an HDMI extender about a foot long, power supply, some round stickies, and the device itself.

I thought it would be the size of a USB flash drive but it is considerably bigger, maybe 2 1/2 9V batteries long about the some depth and width as said 9V batteries.

I thought it would be powered by 5V, it needs 12V 1.5 amp

I tried to hookup my HDMI game capture device to it, at first I thought HDCP prevented it from working

It ended up being a monitor recognition issue.

On one end you plug in the USB cable (this is where I have a USB keyboard and USB mouse) or you can connect via Bluetooth.

On the other end is the HDMI port, the cap is removable and others mentioned it it easy to lose, I totally agree

Power on is really fast, apologize for the analog shot, but at this point my capture system was not set yet.  But first thing you are greeted with is the language keybord and network.

After selecting a network and putting in any passphrase you are greeted with a login screen where you can put in your google credentials.

I use two factor authentication so after putting in me email and password, I had to put in my 6 digit code.

After that it started syncing some of my preferences, note that when I started the browser is synced up several more chrome specific settings.

Then I got to choose a profile picture

Then I was offered a tour of my new device

I just went straight to the desktop

At the bottom right I could go in to settings

It looked a lot like the chrome browser settings but it is different.

For one thing I could wipe the device with a power wash.

I was curious if netflix would work, it did want to identify my device and lock it in to me.  But in the end it did play, quality wasn’t that great but it did play.

Not sure who this target device would be for, it sure is not portable because you need a screen, keyboard and mouse.  I can see this in the living room running as a video front end, not sure if it works with plex, or it is something I can have my mom use.

Curious device, it works, my first Chrome OS device.
