New ESXi Up

And doing production loads, but found an issue with the 10G switch.

Have the issue regarding incompatible GBIC’s. Works with the DAC, but I need the GBIC to work.

Also last day of Wa State Fair, sent youngest in there to buy food.

Seahawks sure suck this year.

Anyway back to work, I know chopping post, oh also ran a bunch of my steps today, running out of time. Hence the quick post.

Weight was actually 310.2 after my walk.

New Host Built Migration Begins

With my new host up, I am beginning to migrate VMs off of the new ones to see if it will recognize them on the new system.

If not I will have to do this the hard way.

Anyway, want to retire at least 1 host, preferably two before the weekend is out.

Finally slowed down

After 8 days of trying to prevent data loss and disaster, I finally can sit back and relax and finish building my ESXi host.

I have enough RAM, but I am adding more, but I am going to move some workloads over this weekend. This new ESXi host will replace two existing ESXi hosts, a file server, and most applications on an application server.

My New HP-Z840 ESXi 7 host
  • Two E5-2630v4 Xeon hosts
  • 128GB of RAM (probably upgrade to 256GB before end of year), can upgrade to 512 without replacing RAM and up to 2TB of RAM if I rip out and replace.
  • Quadro K620 which will do a PCI pass though for transcoding
  • NVS510 for Video and secondary encoding if needed
  • 1275W power supply, that was a pleasant surprise
  • Two 1GB Intel Ethernet ports on the motherboard
  • Two 10GB SFP+ ports on an expansion card

Storage deserves its own section

  • Has an HP Z Turbo drive which was a huge surprise that is compatible with ESXi 7.
  • Has a Perc H200E with external mini SAS SFF 8088. Can support 8 external drives, got a drive cage for that (more pix in the future). Note that this card is NOT ESXi 7 compatible, I intend to passthrough the card to a VM.
  • Built in to the motherboard are 6 traditional AHCI SATA ports
  • Another 8 SAS Ports
  • Internally I can fit four 3.5″ drives SATA or SAS, they go to the onboard SAS Ports.
  • Two external drive bays are fitted with 6x drive ICY Dock Tough Armor MB608SP-B for a total of 12 2.5″ drives.
  • With 12 drives external and 4 drives internal I do not have enough ports, so I added an HP H240 HBA in IT mode. This is SAS3 which can support 12GB/s.
  • The HP Z turbo drive is the main boot drive (no USB flash drives this time), a 512GB SSD is a backup ESXi7 drive, and I also have a 256GB SSD Rocky Linux Drive, and a 128GB SSD Drive for testing.
  • If you are keeping track that leaves me with 9 2.5″ drives for VMFS data stores, 4 3.5″ drives for VMFS data stores and 8 external (via passthrough on a VM) 3.5″ drives.

Having fun, this should last me a couple of years.

Oh, also saw a great deal on a small PC, at raspberry prices where they are at today, why not. It was $60 and can do h.264 encoding on the i3 CPU.

Didn’t Slow Down Today

Still a whole bunch of work today, but I was able to get some personal stuff done, but not enough hours in the day.

My new ESXi host is almost complete. Got it booting on Rocky as well.

Kind of excited at how this is going to work. Also looking at a schedule to import VMs and upgrade of components.

More to come.

Been Busy Forgot To Post

Yeah I been so busy forgot to post yesterday, its rare that I forget, so just finish posting yesterdays post.

Anyway got a lot accomplished today, the SAN it work is supposed to be stable, woke up and we were on half a node. But that is supposedly all fixed now. We are watching it now.

Also got some work programming done, figured out how to better read json files, specifically ones created by govc for VC. A tool called JSONView.exe

https://www.mitec.cz/jsonv.html

Also figured out how to use python to read these files and format them nicely. Still learning but it is cool.

Also figured out how to get my NVIDIA Quadro K620 and NVIDIA Quadro NVS510 to work in a Rocky 8 VM. I used precompiled binaries and was able to compile ffmpeg to work with it. Putting it through some tests as I post.

SAN Still Crashed

This a late post, should have been 9/20 but posting on 9/21

SAN still down, a lot going on at work so burned out can’t keep up.

Hopefully tonight will get some sleep.

ESXi host coming together, but found out the Nvidia Quadro Cards may not do what I want. RHEL removed some sort of package so I could not compile. RHEL8.6 as kmap_types.h is removed from kernel-devel.

End of Summer

I thought today was the end of summer 2022, looks like we have a few more days.

Starting the reflection, had a lot to do during the summer of 2022.

Las Vegas, State fair, Trips etc.

Going to start getting darker early.

WA State Fair 2022

Wow that wasn’t that fun. Sure enjoyed food, kept the tradition alive, man there were a lot of downside.

First off, the lines, there were lines to get parking, the lines to get inside, lines to get food, lines to buy stuff. One line that seemed weird was the scone lines, didn’t know they were that popular.

Then the expense, things were so definitely more expensive. I think we spend $500 for a few hours.

Finally, we went on a Sunday, the only day we could fit in. So not a fault of the fair, but just scheduling.

But we did have some fun and great food.

One thing that was remarkable was the pictures, wife was totally shocked at how much thinner I look.

On the technical front, work is killing me, one thing after another keeps the problem form being fixed.

Another thing is SAS2008 cards, looks like they only work in CentOS 7 and older ESXi 6.7 environments. That was a pain to figure out.

Dell H200 not working

Got a weird problem, when I am running ESXi 7 my Dell H200 does not pass through.

So it is going to set me back a bit.

Hoping to find something that will work.

Learning New ESXi Host

There is a lot to learn on this new ESXi host, there is a weird RAID setup, trying to passthrough an HBA (visible in Linux) and power considerations.

One thing I found out was the power supply that came with my system was 1275 watts, not the lower 800. Cool because the 1275 required a bunch of new cabling, but this one included it.

Anyway more later.
