Daylight Basement Cleaning

Got 1/2 my steps done in the morning to free up my afternoon from getting my steps in. Looks like I did not need that much time.

With my son’s help got it done pretty quick like 2 hours and we spend time afterwards watching the 1996 Movie Independence Day.

Looks like it can be a place to hang out, need to start clearing out the boxes.

I should bring the label printer down there and rig a camera to inventory boxes.

Am motivated now to go down there an hour day to pack a box.

Also did some quick research on redoing my crash case. Thinking of getting a monitor that does VGA directly and be powered via 5V to 12V booster.

Still got 3000 steps to go, if I don’t get it done by midnight I will update my post.

Accidentally Purchased A Laptop

Its weird, I bid low on ebay for a laptop and won.

It is for a Dell Latitude 7290. Should be compatible with Windows 11.

It cost me a whopping 77.07 with taxes and shipping. Cheaper than the NVME card I plan to put in there.

There are caveats though

  1. No OS
  2. No Battery
  3. No AC Adapter

No problem, I have OS license.

No problem, I wanted a known fresh battery

No problem, I have AC adapters already.

Couple enhancements I am looking at with this new system.

  • Mobile Data (via T-Mobile)
  • Locked down secure, no usb or network boot
  • Yubikey (Finally)
  • USB-C Power Bank

Anyway, this is the start of something new I hope, with most of my Linux boxes at R9 and cloud ready to go to R9, hoping the laptop will be some sort of lifeboat, seed.

On the fitness status, 10k steps seems to be getting easier, still hard though, just that I can power through 9000 steps in about 100 minutes like I did today.

Also had an incredible sleep last night, I felt refreshed all day.

Cracking 340 is doable.

Financial State Better

Looks like my finances are recovering from Christmas. Balances are going down and bills are getting easier to pay.

Not out of the woods yet things starting to get better. There is a good chance we will make our 2024 goals.

Weather not cooperating, still dismal, but I did hit the gym and was on the treadmill, getting the BP up to where it needs to be.

So close

Made it of course just took a few steps.

MQTT at AWS

Couple years ago I set up an MQTT server on AWS. MQTT is meant more like a private server to me. But there was a need. So for my future self

This was needed to set it up

allow_anonymous false
password_file /etc/mosquitto/passwd
listener 8883 IP.GO.HE.RE
certfile /etc//mosquitto/cert.pem
cafile /etc/mosquitto/chain.pem
keyfile /etc/mosquitto/mosquitto.key

Then to add a password 

mosquitto_passwd -c /etc/mosquitto/passwd alice

For the client to connect it is something like this 

mosquitto_pub -h IP.GO.HE.RE -t test/topic -p 8883 --cafile fullchain.crt -u "alice" -P "abcd1234" -m "Testing"

Kind of cool, but just in case I need an MQTT Mosquitto server in the future.

Today got my steps done early and easily.

Barely Made it

Actually got over an hour left as I post but really felt my workout was last minute.

I was working from today but the weather was non cooperative , it has been raining for most of the day.

I did finish though and other thing a late dinner, pretty much got it done.

This weight is a bit of illusion, it was just after I finished walking, earlier in the day it was 345.2.

AWS was a good deal

It was fun while it lasted, still learning, and I have to accept things change.

No I have to review my network, done it before, getting rid of DSL, moving stuff to AWS, virtualizing.

The thing is, AWS was so cheap I did not care, at $30 per month it was nothing. Now at $70 it is something.

You would expect me to try and cut expenses, but I am finding other options, and am actually expanding.

Weird huh.

Combine that with ESXi not being free anymore, and soaring price of electricity, I can probably save.

AWS and IP Addresses

This was the first month of the new pricing for AWS IP addresses and it really hurts.

It more than doubled my monthly cost.

Not sure how I am going to reconcile things, maybe there are other things I can do.

I will start planning my new stuff.

Forced Cleanup of Zoneminder

I didn’t delete any recordings, but I messed up the database a bit for zoneminder.

So the good news is I am going to clean up my zoneminder database, it will look clean again.

Anyway got my steps in late, pretty happy, wasn’t too bad, got it done.

Also playing with AWS and Rocky 9 images.

Hour Long Treadmill

Didn’t think I could do it but I did, I was able to go 60 minutes on the treadmill to finish or at least get close to my 10k steps.

Yesterday I crushed it but today I was beat and barely made it.

Felt like a slow day too, I had work to do.
