Yesterday I woke up late, although I fixed a huge AWS problem I had. Today although I did not wake up super late, I slept in and woke up to some powered off ESXi hosts.
When I brought up the ESXi hosts, one of them lost a data store. Luckily I have backups, unfortunately one of them was a Domain Controller. On that same DS was a Linux box, I rebuilt from backups fairly quickly. The DC took much longer, partially because I built using an essentials version when it should have been a Standard.
To be fair, the service came up and rebuild was easy, but still slow.
Went to casino late last night, looks like gambling can be a problem if you do not know when to quit. I was ahead I should have gone home. Need to change my strategy plan.
Came home late, slept late. I should have finished sooner and gotten to bed earlier. Woke up late, like 1 or 2PM.
I did figure out, in the short few hours I was awake, what was wrong with my VM. Couple things I needed to do, first off enable serial connectivity, another thing is to enable bios names.
At about midnight last night (a little past), Comcast went down again.
I successfully switched to my mobile hotspot via ddwrt router and was able to get some internet functionality back.
By coincidence this device came in today.
GSM USB Modem
It goes under the name KuWFi 4G LTE USB WiFi Modem Mobile.
When you plug it in, it gives you an RFC 1918 IP address (you can configure this)
From there you can connect to the Internet.
It does appear as an ethernet device in Windows. I am going to try this with Linux, but online reviews said after a while it reverts to a “modeswitch to a GSM modem”. I vaguely recall what that is, but I am going to do more research on it.
For those researching, I basically got a t-mobile SIM, activated it using a normal smart phone (in my case a Pixel Pro 7) then moved the SIM into the device.
The SIM actually goes into the USB portion.
So when you get it plugged in like I said you get an IP address via DHCP, the default gateway is the device and you can connect to it with a browser.
From the browser you can send and receive SMS messages.
We will see though, I am going to connect my Linux box to it and see how it behaves for a few weeks.
I know I am gonna be tired tomorrow, usually when I don’t sleep well it hits they day after. So I was OK today, but I think I am really going to feel it tomorrow.
