Reflections on 2020

This is the time of year I look back at what happened the past 366 days (being a leap year), and most if it was not good, but some of it was, so this year I will start the post with all the bad stuff.

The Bad

  • Year started ominously enough, no fireworks, it was too windy, my wife said it was a bad omen. Sure was.
  • There were massive fires in Australia
  • Ukrainian flight downed by missiles
  • Coronavirus (This will have its own section) March 11, was a dark day.
  • Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna died in a helicopter crash
  • The impeachment of Trump
  • UK withdraws from EU

and this was just January

  • The Corona Virus later named Covid 19 and nicknamed by some the CCP virus started a global pandemic
  • The pandemic caused the economy to tank
  • The NBA season was suspended
  • Olympics postponed
  • There was a deadly shooting in Canada, 22 people died
  • Don’t know if Kim Jong-Un leader of North Korea was still running the country
  • There were murder hornets in Washington
  • Two black men were killed in separate incidents, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floydd, and another incidient where a black women Breonna Taylor was shot in her home, ignited huge protests around the country during a pandemic.
  • Anarchists took advantage of the protests to begin rioting.
  • Some of them used the riots as cover to steal and loot from stores.
  • In all this my wife had a death in her Family and she could not attend due to the Pandemic.
  • Kids were told to stay home and do remote learning.
  • My kids missed a bunch of milestones, Senior Prom, Graduation, Senior cut day. the last semester was gone.
  • A lot of annual traditions were gone too, none of these happened, Tulips Festival, Canada Night Market, LinuxFest, Santa Pictures, Halloween, Washington State Fair.
  • Sports were done, no track or cross country.
  • Although we had Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other Birthday parties, they were much smaller and limited just to our household.
  • No bike club trips
  • Then there is the story of my mom, which I will not go in to publicly
  • CentOS 8 had its life shortened.
  • My maker meetup was put on hold
  • There was a run on everything from Toilet paper, wipes, flour.
  • CRV got a dent
  • Started getting arthritis
  • In September there was some massive smoke, had to jury rig air filters.

The Good

But there were some good, so 2020 was not all bad.

  • Got to work from home, while at home learned new technologies like BLE, AWS, grafana, and Containers
  • Three of my kids did graduate, and their ceremonies were unique.
  • My youngest son that is still in the public school system is actually doing well academically.
  • We replaced out nasty rug
  • Repaired our back deck.
  • Painted the house
  • Got our computers upgraded. (although ironically as I was posting here it crashed for the first time)
  • There will be a change in U.S. Presidency.
  • My wife actually made more at home through unemployment then at work.
  • With my kids working, we are actually recovering quicker than most from this weird economy.
  • Stock market is up
  • Seahawks are doing good.
  • As I embraced CentOS 7, I saw CentOS 8, and was ready to begin exploring when there was an announcement by the CentOS team that they will terminate it early, so, I am stuck with CentOS 7.
  • A lot of new stuff, new bed, new fridge, new dog. new computers, new couches.
  • Decommed the MS SBS server we had
  • Did a video for Linuxfest
  • Saw a nutritionist for most of the year and got a personal trainer
  • New plex server as well
  • New File Server
  • Got an ATOM Pi
  • Upgraded out comcast connection
  • Upgraded Zoneminder
  • Got a new CPAP
  • My mom was here for the Holidays before the travel concerns kicked in.

There was a lot bad events, but a lot of new things happened to us as well.

So this is it goodbye 2020, your turn 2021. Posting my new goals for 2021.

Did run 1/2 mile of RTC today.

Ended last year at 295.0, so this year was a net gain of 24lbs. That is a lot.
