Doing Well On Short Runs

After today’s two workouts, I have come to the conclusion I am not ready for long runs (longer than 5 miles) yet.  I think I will do more of the medium runs for this and next week.

Today I took the unusual step of running a four plus in the morning, with the expectation of doing a light gym workout.

I did well (not my best time this year)

Time: 50:50

I think I should stick with it.

What was good was my “light” gym workout.

The intent was to do some treadmill then hit the weights.  I found myself hitting 6.4MPH, during the main 21 minutes a scheduled for my run I averaged 6MPH, and was able to do 2.1 miles.  Add a 5 minute cool down and I was close to 2.5 miles but over the minimum 2.2 miles I wanted to go.  With the cool down I was averaging 5.8MPH.

At 6MPH, I can finish the 1/2 marathon in 2 hours and 11 minutes.  So what will it take to get to a 2 hour marathon?

Four things:

  • Well for one thing, I need to get my speed up to 6.6MPH, that will do it.
  • Then I need to sustain that speed for 2 hours instead of 20 minutes
  • Next these were treadmill miles, road miles are absolutely different.
  • Finally, I need to add hills, the course has them, I need to train for them.

I can’t delay doing long runs, I have Seahawk 12k coming up which is good because it will force me to do long runs.

I got my work cut out for me.  If I can get to 6.6MPH for 1/2 an hour on the treadmill by end of March, the odds of me doing the half marathon in two hours really improve.  Add to that some weight loss and couple hilly runs, I think I can do it.

Speaking of weight, my pre run weight was 262.8, so so close to being at training weight which is under 260.  I hope to be under 260 (consistently) by end of March.  Maybe that is enough to get me hitting 6.6MPH for 1/2 an hour on the treadmill.

Weight: 260.6
