Getting Chef Working

One of the reasons why I went through all of these upgrades was to be able to quickly rebuild servers and re provision the services.

I have most of my DMZ servers at CentOS 6 64bit (just 1 server is not), and have fairly decent documentation on how to deploy these machines.

Now, I want to take that next step and be able to deploy using chef.

I first tried installing chef on an existing box, unfortunately, the rpm I installed collided with apache.  Also the start up process is so different from other applications I have installed in the past.  It seems to want to start the process via /etc/init and not use the normal runlevels that CentOS 6 uses.  So I ended up starting it up on its own box.

So far it looks OK, I will revisit this more tomorrow, but I am fairly sure that it will be a while before this server is in production.

On the cleanup side, I have taken a step back a bit.  With the Christmas decorations coming up, my office is getting all the stuff that was in the living room.

Just doing pushups and situps.  More cleanup tomorrow.
