DIY Rack Upgrades

It has been over a decade since I originally built this rack.

Original Rack

I should have thrown this out a couple years later when I got a real rack.

But there were couple upgrades done that kept the server. This weekend I spent a large amount of time upgrading the rack.

I replaced one of the machines in the rack which was in a Fractal Node 804 case into a rack mount one. That took a day to move components into that rack mount server. Another thing I added was a new 8 port HDMI KVM. I did not have any pictures I took that I can publish but here is the front of the rack now.

A problem I had with the old rack was loose USB Hard drives. I fixed this with rack mounted brackets I 3D printed.

Another problem I solved was a way to organize the power supplies for the 1L servers. I 3D printed a holder for those power supplies.

Another rack improvement was a 2U Patch panel I removed the CAT 6 adapters from. This is to help keep cables in and UPS from falling out. This huge fix was to make it easy to move the rack.

This top has been on the top for a while, but wanted to note it is also a white board where you can draw stuff on.

Rack is way more functional now. I can use it for its purpose as a workbench.

So this was most of my weekend. I was tired today, the slept a lot. But I think it was a good weekend, didn’t finish my entire list, but this was good regardless.

Physically a rest day.
